Features and In Depth Features
First published for
International Mountain Day in December: New Plastic Free Yr Wyddfa
Project strives to secure plastic free status for Yr Wyddfa, Wales’ highest
mountain from Eryri / Snowdonia National Park.
The summit of Yr
Wyddfa (Snowdon), Wales’ highest mountain, is a hot spot for litter: it’s where
all paths converge, and the facilities are located. This correlates with the
2020 survey on microplastic pollution, which reported that soil samples taken
from the summit were 5% microplastic, a higher percentage than found in samples
from all other locations on the mountain. This is madness and Eryri National
Park Authority are trying to do something about it. [more]

The Devil's in the details for waders By Sir Nicholas Bacon
Bt.of Raveningham Estate
It seems rather strange that the Government grants
that were paid in the 1970’s in order to remove dykes and to drain marshes are
now being reversed into the reestablishment of the old dyke lines, the blocking
up of drains and the raising of the water levels to re-establish marshland. The
Raveningham Estate was ahead of it’s time starting this process in the 90’s.

This month has news from the
end of last year and the start of this.
The Scottish Government announced
new biodiversity funding and the James Hutton Institute launched a new £2m water
quality project to protect river ecosystems and our new Featured Charity: PTES
detailed five goals for nature at the summit, saying Without Biodiversity, There
is No Net Zero. Rewilding Britain launches the new Rewilding Challenge Fund
awards £100k to large-scale rewilding projects. Mixed news for woodland as
Wakehurst forced to close 150-acre nature reserve in fight against deadly ash
dieback disease however UCL research shows UK woodlands could store almost twice
as much carbon as previously estimated; National Trust's largest ancient
woodland set to be restored on a scale rarely seen.
New research shows more
than one in four birds in Wales in serious trouble according to an RSPB report
whilst in Scotland NatureScot have found that birds increase in urban
areas.
And finally some exciting events from just down the coast from CJS,
you can't ignore a very large walrus just lazing on the harbourside! The initial
response from BDMLR on being notified was “Are you joking?”, read about the
Return of Thor.
