Organisation profile: HighGround charity starts a new chapter
by founder, Anna Baker-Cresswell
As we enter our 8th busy year and I
look forward to the arrival of Tim our first Rural Employment Manager generously
funded by The Royal Foundation, I am so grateful for the support, leadership and
encouragement of Ian Elliott our fantastic Chairman of Trustees and the many,
many people who have funded, presented and connected to help the people who find
HighGround on their journey towards Life beyond the military – Outdoors. [more ]
The Rewilding Network – Spearheading Rapid Rewilding Across Britain
written by Sara King, Rewilding Britain Network Lead
Interest in
rewilding has boomed and is at levels never seen before. It has captured the
imagination of so many, including landowners looking to reframe their approach
to managing their land. At Rewilding Britain, we are developing a new Rewilding
Network aimed to provide practical advice and guidance, connect landowners with
each other for a joined up approach, and support action on the ground. [more]
Friends United, National Federation of Parks and Green
Spaces
Slowly but surely, especially over the last 20 years, an inspirational
grassroots movement has been arising of people dedicated to improving, caring
for, protecting, animating, appreciating and publicising, and taking some
‘ownership’ of their own local green spaces in all kinds of ways. There are now
over 7,000 local ‘Friends of’ groups, each collectively contributing and ‘adding
value’ to their sites to a greater or lesser extent, depending on their
capacity. [more]
Briefly. The new tech startup that's helping businesses get noticed
by national media - an introduction.
Small, country businesses and
charities are tapping in to new tech to get their business stories published in
national magazines and newspapers – without being faced with expensive PR agency
fees. [more]
Protecting the North York Moors National Park International Dark Sky
Reserve written by Mike Hawtin, Head of Polyhalite Projects and
Catriona McLees, Head of Marketing & Communications both from North York
Moors National Park Authority
Now the North York Moors National Park has
achieved international recognition for its Dark Skies, we not only need to
celebrate them (more about that later), we also need to work hard to protect
them. A key obligation in protecting Dark Skies is to ensure that we not only
prevent the spread of additional light pollution through planning guidance but
also reduce existing levels. This doesn’t mean asking residents and businesses
to turn off all lighting but it does mean encouraging everybody to use light
sympathetically and not to waste it. To help deliver the improvements, we’ve set
up a lighting improvement scheme to offer grants in targeted areas to help
reduce light pollution. [more]
What book sparked your enthusiasm for the natural world? By
Amy Worley, CJS Features Commissioning Editor
There are books of fiction that
spark the imagination and draw us in to nature but there are also factual and
reference books that allow us to learn more about nature and wildlife. For
International Book Giving Day on 14 February I asked some conservation
professionals what books influenced them and what they would like to pass on to
the next generation. Includes an introduction to the newly released What to Look
for series from Ladybird books, [more]

CJS Information and other articles
Details of recruitment advertising in CJS
Weekly during 2020
Unsurprisingly numbers in all sectors are
significantly lower than in previous years. However, there were still 1177
adverts posted through the year, 498 before the lockdown and 679 since. During
April we published only 12 adverts across all four editions. Until the pandemic,
in 25 years of producing CJS Weekly we'd never published editions with just two
adverts, but last year was a record setter in all sorts of ways we'd rather
forget. [more]
We asked, you spoke, we listened
At the end of last year
we asked you, our lovely readers, to help us out and tell us a little about
yourselves so that we could update our reader profile for the advertisers. We've
crunched all the data and our advertiser's information now carries the latest
details. We've also made a few changes already and now have some new projects
for 2021. [more]
Together for a better internet
During this past year the
internet has become our link to the rest of the world, connecting family and
friends as well as allowing business and education to continue at arm's length.
With this in mind this year's Safer Internet Day becomes even more important.

Facebook live session recap: Richard Dodd from Wildwood Ecology gave an excellent presentation on The Top Five Non-technical Skills That Employers Are Looking For - Identifying and developing the right skillset and mindset for a career as an ecologist. [more]
Lots of Government news and announcements plus
reactions. Several interesting land management stories covering topics as diverse as heather burning to the latest on neonics. Good news on the jobs front
with Seasonal Rangers returning at Cairngorms National Park.
And
finally: we're finishing with some bears - polar bears happy in
the recent snow and tale of a silly old bear at London Zoo
Calendar of events and short courses occurring in April plus additions made over the past month.
