Written for World Ranger Day (31 July): A
Day as a Rangerby Paul McNeill
As a ranger, I am often told (during the summer
months at least) how lucky I am, normally whilst emptying a dog bin, which often
amuses me as anyone else who has emptied a dog bin on a hot, sunny day will
testify to - Dog poo and scented dog poo bags! Whose idea was that? Funny how no
one communicates that in January when the dew-drop on my nose is frozen and I
cannot feel the hammer across my thumb. [more]
The Increase in Road Verge Wilding and
the Role of Native Flora By Joshua Styles, NWRPI Project Co-ordinator
and Ecologist
Although our verges may be poorly managed by and
large, the tides are turning; local authorities across the UK are adopting a
shift in management. Many local authorities have adopted positive changes in
management simply by mowing less, and mowing later, acting on sound ecological
advice. However, other authorities, including Rotherham Council, have made less
desirable changes, replacing grassy verges and central reservations with
non-native displays, perversely repackaging these mixes as a form of
‘restoration’. [more ]
Grow your own food security? The hidden
potential of urban horticulture By Dr Jill Edmonson, EPSRC Living
with Environmental Change Fellow, Institute for Sustainable Food at the
University of Sheffield
The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the fragility
of our food supply chains as never before. The empty supermarket shelves that
marked the early stages of lockdown prompted many of us to recognise the UK’s
reliance on imports and just-in-time deliveries for the first time. As we look
towards recovery, building a more resilient food system is crucial – and we can
make a start in our own backyards. [more ]

Dementia
Aside from working to conserve our native reptile

with nature – those facing barriers to getting outdoors and engaged with
wildlife. Since 2018, one particular focus has been providing opportunities for
people living with dementia. We run projects in Glasgow, in Somerset, we are
setting up another in London in 2020, as well as developing others across the

The Joys of Moth-ing by Dr Zoe
Randle, Senior Surveys Officer
Moth Night is the annual celebration of moths and
moth recording. It is organised by Atropos, Butterfly Conservation and the UK
Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. The arrival of Moth Night every year (this
year from 27 – 29 August) serves as a timely reminder of the joy to be had in
moth-ing and also of just how easy it can be to study these amazing creatures.
The great appeal of moth recording is that you don’t have to go anywhere in
particular to find numerous species. An average garden can be home to a couple
of hundred species. [more ]

Saving Wildcats – the road to wildcat
recovery in Scotland by David Barclay – Ex-situ Conservation Manager,
Saving Wildcats
Wildcats in Scotland (Felis silvestris
silvestris) are one of the UK’s most iconic, and most endangered, species.
Once widespread across the UK, estimates now suggest only one hundred
individuals may remain, and all in Scotland. Saving Wildcats is an exciting
development for wildcat conservation. Dedicated to wildcat restoration in the
Scottish Highlands, this is the first wildcat recovery project in the UK that
focuses on conservation breeding for release. Saving Wildcats provides,
arguably, the last hope for the wildcat in Scotland. [more ]
A National Nature Service by
Richard Benwell, Chief Executive at Wildlife and Countryside Link
With unemployment expected to double as a result
of covid-19, Wildlife & Countryside Link and its partners are proposing a
“National Nature Service”: a Government-sponsored employment and training
programme, providing paid work in environmental improvement. Reshaping our
countryside: Yet although we are starting from a much more managed and regulated
landscape, the scale of change needed in our landscape is arguably even greater
today than it was in 1930s America. A green recovery from the coronavirus
pandemic means a recovery that will make our economy more resilient to future
environmental risks and that will need serious change. [more ]
International Youth Day – Young People in
Conservation by Emily Seccombe
Today, environmental issues attracts more youth
activism than perhaps any other topic. Youth activism is incredibly important in
raising awareness and setting agendas , as Greta Thunberg has shown. I’m
thankful for the youth-focussed conservation organisations in the UK that I’ve
been able to get involved with, as part of my own journey in conservation. As
it’s International Youth Day, this piece highlights some of the fantastic
nature-based projects and organisations that are youth-led or youth-focussed.

It's hard to believe but this is the last
monthly winner of our Photography Competition - it's run for a little
longer than originally intended due to the pause brought about by the
coronavirus pandemic. The July theme was
Hidden Gems and we received some lovely photos, however, for once we found the
decision quite easy and unanimously agreed that Jon Hayter's wonderful photo of
a bat box full of brown long-eared bats was the clear winner. [more]
