Making the leap into self-employment

First make sure you have some savings to cover a lean period of earning and if you want to buy a house do it before you leave employment.
Develop your skill set you will have a lot of job titles when you become your own boss – you are suddenly the labourer, administrator, contract negotiator, accountant and main operative all in one.
Richard worked on short term and fixed contracts whilst he developed his freelance work to a level at which he could make the leap. Take time to understand the basics of company finance, tax, shareholders, pensions etc. Even if it doesn’t seem relevant at the time getting everything set up correctly will pay dividends later.
